WHEN TO GO

The most popular time to visit Costa Rica is during the dry season, which runs from mid-December through April. From mid-December until early February, you have the combined advantages of good weather and relatively lush vegetation. But bear in mind that in April, some areas, especially Guanacaste, are drier and dustier for lack of enriching rains.

To escape the tourist crowds, you’d better visit the country during the rainy season (May to mid-December), when the vegetation is at its lushest and most gorgeous. And it's often dry and sunny in the morning (making beach-going possible) and wet in the afternoon.
The drawback is that some roads -- especially those without asphalt -- are washed out, and require four-wheel-drive vehicles.
During the rainiest months -- September and October -- some rural hotels simply shut down. Perhaps it's best to visit during July and August, when the storms let up a bit, or mid-December, when the rains are tapering off but the high tourist season has yet to kick in.

Costa Rica's climate varies greatly between the lowlands and the mountains. Tropical temperatures generally hover between 70°F and 85°F; humidity, especially in the dense jungle of the Caribbean coast, is high. Guanacaste, on the more arid Pacific coast, is perhaps the hottest region, with dry-season temperatures frequently up in the 90s. Remember to drink plenty of bottled water to avoid dehydration.
